Batchim: how Korean final consonants work

Once you can recognize basic Hangul blocks, the next big pronunciation idea is batchim (받침). Batchim is the consonant position at the bottom of a Korean syllable block. It helps explain why the sound you hear is sometimes different from reading each letter independently.

Where is the batchim?

A syllable block can contain an initial consonant, a vowel and sometimes a final consonant. That final consonant is the batchim.

Final consonants have a smaller set of ending sounds

At the end of a syllable, Korean consonants do not always keep the same sound quality they have at the beginning. Several written consonants are pronounced through a smaller set of final sound patterns. That is why spelling and natural speech are not always a simple letter-by-letter match.

The final consonant can link to the next vowel

When the following syllable begins with ㅇ before a vowel, a batchim often links forward in pronunciation.

Korean speech is highly connected. Final and initial consonants can affect each other, so words should be learned with audio rather than by pronouncing each block in isolation. A familiar example is 합니다, commonly heard approximately as hamnida.
