Hangul alphabet: how to start reading Korean

Hangul looks unfamiliar at first because Korean letters are grouped into square-looking syllable blocks. But the system is highly structured. You do not memorize each block as a separate symbol. You learn the letters and then see how they combine.

Start with basic consonants and vowels

Modern Korean has a core set of basic consonants and vowels, plus additional tense and combined forms that you can add later. For a beginner, the first goal is recognizing the shapes and their approximate sounds.

The exact sound of a consonant can shift depending on its position in the syllable and surrounding sounds. At the start, focus on recognition rather than forcing English sound labels to be perfect.

Letters combine into syllable blocks

A block represents one syllable. The letters are arranged together rather than written in a straight horizontal line.

Once you see the pieces inside the block, Korean stops looking like hundreds of unrelated symbols.

The layout changes with the vowel

Some vowels are visually vertical, so the consonant tends to sit beside them. Others are horizontal, so the consonant tends to sit above them.

You do not need to memorize this as a complicated rule. Build and read blocks repeatedly and the layout becomes automatic.

Then add final consonants

After you can read simple consonant + vowel blocks, you can add a final consonant at the bottom. This final position is called batchim.

Batchim brings pronunciation changes of its own, so it is better treated as the next step after basic block reading.

How to practice Hangul with Anki

Do not only review isolated letters. Mix three card types: letter recognition, block building and short real words. This helps you move from “I know ㄱ” to “I can actually read 가, 고 and 한국.”
