Por vs para: choose the relationship, not the English word
Both por and para can translate as “for”, but they express different relationships. Thinking in meanings is more reliable than translating word by word.
Use para for goals and destinations
Estudio para aprender español. · I study in order to learn Spanish.
Este regalo es para Ana. · This gift is for Ana.
Este regalo es para Ana. · This gift is for Ana.
Use por for cause, route, exchange and duration
Lo hice por ti. · I did it because of/for you.
Caminamos por el parque. · We walked through the park.
Caminamos por el parque. · We walked through the park.
Quick test: purpose/recipient/destination → para. Cause/route/exchange/duration → por.
