Ser vs estar: the difference that actually matters

Published August 28, 2026 · DeckLearn USA

English uses one verb, to be, where Spanish often chooses between ser and estar. The useful question is not simply “permanent or temporary?” That shortcut breaks quickly. A better starting point is: are you identifying what something is, or describing its current state or location?

Use ser to identify and classify

Ser is common when you define identity, origin, profession, relationships, time, material or a basic characteristic.

Soy estudiante.
I am a student.

Ella es de Texas.
She is from Texas.

La mesa es de madera.
The table is made of wood.

In these sentences, Spanish is telling you what the subject is, where it comes from or how it is classified.

Use estar for state and location

Estar is common for physical or emotional states and for the location of people and things.

Estoy cansado.
I am tired.

El libro está en la mesa.
The book is on the table.

Estamos listos.
We are ready.

The important idea is that estar presents the subject in a condition, result or position.

Why “permanent vs temporary” is not enough

A person can be permanently dead and Spanish still says está muerto. A city can exist in the same place for centuries and Spanish still says Madrid está en España. The choice is about how Spanish frames the information, not how long it lasts.

Better shortcut: use ser for identity/classification and estar for state/location. Then learn the important exceptions through complete sentences.

Adjectives can change meaning

With some adjectives, changing the verb changes the idea.

Él es aburrido. → He is boring.
Él está aburrido. → He is bored.

Ella es lista. → She is clever.
Ella está lista. → She is ready.

This is one reason sentence-based study works better than memorizing isolated vocabulary.

A small exception worth knowing

Locations of people and objects normally use estar, but the location of an event commonly uses ser: La reunión es en el hotel. You do not need to master every exception at A1, but seeing the pattern early prevents confusion later.
