How to use Anki without turning reviews into a chore

Anki works best when every review is an act of retrieval, not just recognition. The daily routine can stay simple.

1. Try to answer before revealing

Read the prompt, produce the answer from memory, then reveal the back. Even a few seconds of genuine recall is more useful than immediately flipping the card.

2. Grade the recall, not your mood

Use Again when you failed, Hard when recall was correct but genuinely difficult, Good for normal successful recall and Easy only when it was substantially easier than expected. See the full Again, Hard, Good or Easy guide.

3. Do due reviews before adding more

New cards create future reviews. If due cards are already accumulating, reduce new cards temporarily instead of feeding the backlog.

4. Keep one clear test per card

A card should make it obvious what you are trying to retrieve. For languages, complete sentences are valuable because they preserve grammar and context, but the prompt still needs a clear target.
