Again, Hard, Good, Easy: what the Anki buttons mean
The buttons are not a way to negotiate with the scheduler. They are a report of what happened during recall. The most useful habit is to answer first, judge the quality of recall honestly, and then choose the matching button.
Hard — you recalled it, but only with unusual difficulty or hesitation.
Good — normal successful recall.
Easy — clearly effortless recall.
Good should be normal
If you remember the answer in a normal way, Good is usually the right choice. Do not press Hard merely because you would like to see the card sooner, and do not press Easy merely because you want fewer reviews.
Repeated Again can reveal a bad card
If the same item keeps failing, the problem may not be your memory. The card may be ambiguous, contain too much information, or be above your current level. Sentence cards with one clear learning target tend to be easier to review honestly.
