Spaced repetition flashcards: review at the right time, not all at once
Spaced repetition is a way to distribute reviews over time instead of repeatedly studying the same material in one session. With flashcards, the basic idea is simple: material you remember well can wait longer before the next review, while difficult material returns sooner.
How spaced repetition works
- Study a card and attempt the answer.
- Check whether the recall was correct.
- Review the card again after a delay.
- Increase the interval when memory is stable.
- Shorten the interval when the card is forgotten or difficult.
Card B: repeatedly forgotten → shorter interval and more frequent review.
Spacing is different from active recall
Active recall is the attempt to retrieve the answer. Spaced repetition is the schedule that determines when that attempt happens again. Good flashcard study usually combines both.

Why cramming and spacing feel different
Repeating a card several times in a few minutes can make it feel familiar, but that does not necessarily mean it will still be available days later. Spacing creates a new retrieval attempt after some forgetting has begun, which makes the review more informative and can support longer-lasting retention.
Is there a perfect spaced repetition schedule?
No single fixed schedule fits every subject, learner and retention goal. Research on spacing shows that effective review intervals depend partly on how long the learner needs to retain the material. A schedule for an exam next week is not identical to a system designed for language retention over years.
Paper flashcards and the Leitner idea
You can use spaced repetition without software. A simple paper system separates cards into boxes or piles. Cards you know move to a less frequent pile; cards you miss return to a more frequent one. This is the basic logic behind the classic Leitner system.
Digital spaced repetition
Digital flashcard tools can automate review timing. Anki is one well-known example: after a review, the scheduler uses your history and grading to decide when the card should return. Modern Anki can use FSRS for adaptive scheduling.

How to avoid review overload
- add new cards gradually;
- complete due reviews consistently;
- reduce new cards when the queue grows too quickly;
- remove or rewrite bad cards instead of repeatedly failing them;
- do not confuse a huge daily workload with effective learning.
Spaced repetition for language learning
Languages contain thousands of words, sentence patterns and sound-meaning connections. Spaced repetition can help keep previously learned material active while new material is added. Card quality still matters: the scheduler cannot rescue an unclear or useless prompt.

It works best for information that benefits from repeated retrieval over time: vocabulary, terminology, symbols, facts, short concepts, formulas, sentence patterns and similar material.
