Hiragana: learn the 46 basic characters with romaji
Hiragana is the first reading system to make automatic. At the beginning, romaji is useful temporary support: connect each symbol to its sound, then cover the Latin letters and practise recognising the kana directly.

Use romaji, then remove it
Read a row once with the romanisation visible. Then hide the small text and read the same row again. The aim is for し to trigger the sound shi directly rather than making you translate through the Latin alphabet first.
Next: voiced sounds such as が and ぱ → combinations such as きゃ → katakana → short kana sentences → kanji with furigana → more natural reading.
