Gustar: stop forcing English word order onto Spanish
English says “I like coffee”. Spanish normally frames the idea differently: Me gusta el café, literally closer to “Coffee is pleasing to me”. Once you understand which element controls the verb, the pattern becomes much more predictable.
The thing liked controls gusta or gustan
Me gusta el libro. — I like the book.
Me gustan los libros. — I like the books.
Me gusta viajar. — I like travelling.
Me gustan los libros. — I like the books.
Me gusta viajar. — I like travelling.
The indirect object pronoun — me, te, le, nos, os, les — marks the person experiencing the preference. The grammatical subject is the thing that is pleasing.
Names use a + person
A Marta le gusta el café.
A mis amigos les gustan estas películas.
A mis amigos les gustan estas películas.
The a + person phrase can clarify who the pronoun refers to or add emphasis.
