Hiragana: 46 basic characters with romaji support
Romaji is useful while the shapes are new, but it should not become a permanent crutch. Pair each kana with its sound first; then practise the same set with the romanisation hidden.

Read twice: once supported, once direct
A practical drill is to read each row with romaji, cover the small text, and immediately read the row again. The second pass is the one that starts building direct script recognition.
