Ser vs estar: identity is not the same as state
The shortcut “ser is permanent, estar is temporary” fails too often. A better starting point is meaning: ser identifies or classifies; estar describes a state or location.
Use ser for identity and classification
Soy canadiense. identifies nationality. El café es una bebida. classifies what something is. Ser is also used for time and many defining characteristics.
Use estar for state and location
Estoy cansado. describes a current state. Toronto está en Canadá. gives location. Some adjectives change meaning with the verb: es aburrido can mean “is boring”, while está aburrido means “is bored”.
