German word order: where does the verb go?
In a normal German main clause, the conjugated verb takes the second position. The first position can contain more than just the subject.
Ich lerne heute Deutsch.
Heute lerne ich Deutsch.
Heute lerne ich Deutsch.
Subordinate clauses
Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.
With subordinating conjunctions such as weil, the conjugated verb moves to the end.
Think in slots, not English word order.
