Der, die, das: learn the article with the noun
German grammatical gender is not a property you can reliably guess from the English meaning of a noun. The most useful beginner habit is therefore to learn the article and noun as one unit: der Tisch, die Stadt, das Buch.
Some endings give useful clues
-ung, -heit, -keit are very often feminine: die Zeitung, die Freiheit, die Möglichkeit.
-chen, -lein are neuter: das Mädchen, das Büchlein.
-chen, -lein are neuter: das Mädchen, das Büchlein.
These patterns help, but they do not replace learning the article with each high-frequency noun.
The article later changes with case
Learning the base gender matters because cases build on it. For example, der Mann becomes den Mann in the accusative. You are not learning random extra articles; you are seeing the same noun move through a grammatical system.
