How many new Anki cards per day?

28 August 2026 · DeckLearn Canada

There is no universal number that works for every learner. Every new card you add today creates future reviews, so the sustainable daily number depends on how much review time you can keep giving the system next week and next month.

Start lower than your maximum

If you can handle 40 new cards once, that does not mean 40 per day is a good setting. A better approach is to start with a manageable number, review daily, and watch what happens to the queue after one or two weeks.

Healthy signal: reviews are completed consistently and the session still feels focused.
Warning signal: reviews begin carrying over, recall quality falls, or you start skipping days because the queue feels too large.

Reviews tell you whether to add more

Increase new cards only when the review load remains comfortable. If reviews are already piling up, reduce or pause new cards until the queue stabilizes.

Quick check

Your review queue is growing every day. What is the best first adjustment?

Spend review time on ready-made language cards, not card creation.
